Clean It Up: A five part series covering key topics in clean beauty in 2020

explaining the motivators behind the recent push for clean beauty

I’m sure we’ve all heard terms thrown around the world of beauty like “clean,” “all natural,” “organic,” “vegan” and “cruelty free,” the list goes on. When I first started this blog, the very first companies to reach out to me were seeking Instagram ambassadors for their new “clean” beauty products. I was eager to have my first so-called brand collaborations, so I gleefully posed for the camera holding out a bottle of this oil or that moisturizer, proudly touting my free product as “all natural” and “green,” having done little to no research on what I was actually promoting. Honestly, I was just desperate to post “#sponsored #gifted.” There, I said it.

Fast forward two years, and I now know that one of the “clean” cosmetics I encouraged my audience to purchase (using my very own personalized coupon code for 15% off, naturally) contained formaldehyde, an extremely well known and dangerous carcinogen. Upon making this realization, I asked myself if I was the only under informed consumer buying and/or promoting cosmetics. Through online research and conversations with my friends and family, I arrived at the conclusion that I was not alone in my naivete.

At the beginning of 2020, I made a commitment to myself to become more aware of what I’m putting in and on my body and to continue to educate myself on why ingredients matter, and then in turn to share that knowledge with the people around me. In this five part series I am calling Clean It Up, my goal is to give a very high-level look at five topics in clean beauty. We will start with this introduction, followed by the concept of clean beauty beyond the buzzword, move on to the health and safety problems consumers are facing within the beauty industry, then some of the key motivators behind the recent push towards cleaner products, followed by how to identify clean products yourself and wrapping up with clean product recommendations at every price point.

I’m really excited about this project, as it is something I have been working on all summer! I look forward to sharing helpful information in an easily digestible format with plenty of info bites you can save for future use and even some fun GIVEAWAYS to spread some awesome clean beauty products to readers! Mark your calendars, the first informational part of the series will be live next week!

I am also going to be sharing some of my favorite clean skincare brands that I have worked with on this project! First up is Acure, and there are SO many reasons to love these products beyond their highly instagrammable aesthetic. They’re focused on skin wellness, and their passion is making safe, clean beauty accessible to everyone. This is directly reflected in their price point. Acure has taken the “green tax” out of clean beauty. In terms of their formulas, in their own words: “No parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde, paraffin, mineral oil or animal testing allowed!” Acure’s brightening collection has been my favorite regimen so far because I love the no fuss consistency of all of the products in the way that they are easy to apply and absorb quickly. I love the way they feel on my skin by immediately making it feel plump and moisturized even before I started to see the brightening glowy benefits. After 10 days, I definitely noticed a difference in the evenness and brightness of my complexion! I have linked up the products I’ve been loving below!

Stay tuned for part two!

XX, Clarissa
